Perfect Nesting: SOTEC and Roboception Combine Pose Estimation and Quality Inspection

In modern industrial automation, every second counts. Efficiency and precision are the cornerstones of smart production processes. But what happens when two critical steps, picking a component and inspecting its quality, run separately? The process slows down, and the potential for errors increases. This is exactly where the partnership between SOTEC and Roboception comes in, creating a seamlessly integrated solution that enables true efficiency.

The Challenge: Separate Processes, Double Complexity

Robot arms combined with sensors are already standard for precisely locating and gripping objects. The software identifies the position, and the robot picks it up. However, the subsequent quality inspection often takes place at a different station and requires separate, externally connected software. This interruption not only makes the overall process more complex and inefficient but also prevents an immediate response to defective parts. A decisive, integrated intermediate step was missing.

The Solution: A Strong Partnership for Smart Integration

SOTEC, an expert in innovative software development and IIoT solutions, and Roboception, a leading manufacturer of 3D stereo sensors and robot vision software, have joined forces. The result is a practical “two-in-one” solution: SOTEC Quail, a flexible software for visual quality inspections, has been linked to Roboception’s object detection. It runs either as a UserSpace App on an rc_cube IPC or as a Docker container within Roboception’s rc_reason_stack.

Specifically, this means that Quail Edge, SOTEC Quail’s runtime containing a trained model of the defects to be detected, runs coupled with Roboception’s pose estimation.

How the Integrated Solution Works

  • Roboception’s 3D vision software detects an object and provides the optimal grip point for the robot.
  • At the same moment, the integrated SOTEC Quail engine performs a visual quality inspection based on the 2D image data provided by the camera.
  • The system identifies not only the part’s position but also whether it has defects such as scratches, contamination, or shape errors.

Within milliseconds, two vital pieces of information are available: the picking position and the quality status.

Defective or contaminated parts can be identified immediately and either rejected or diverted to a separate process step without interrupting the production flow.

Customer Benefits: Seamless, Efficient, and Future-Proof

The advantages of this integrated solution are clear:

  • For existing systems: Roboception customers can seamlessly integrate SOTEC Quail into their current setups, adding a valuable function to their processes.
  • For new systems: Plant builders and integrators receive a fully integrated “two-in-one” solution that reduces complexity from the start, saves space, and maximizes efficiency.

Collaborative Development: From Idea to Success

The collaboration between SOTEC and Roboception goes beyond mere technology integration. Roboception was one of the first beta testers for the Quail Cloud, the central platform for data management, labeling, and AI model training. The Roboception team was able to independently manage their image data, label it, and train the models for quality inspection. This hands-on experience highlights the intuitive usability and the cooperative approach of Quail. The easy handling allows technical experts without deep AI knowledge to create and manage robust inspection models.

"The software for labeling the data was truly simple and intuitive to use. I was able to annotate the defects via mouse in a very short time and train a ready-to-use quality control model on the very first attempt."
